On 2006-2007 Mazda5 vehicles and 2005-2007 Mazda3 vehicles with VIN's
higher than JM1BK******271699 (built after January 1, 2005), the
front ABS encoders (magnetic sensor rotors) are embedded into the
inner
races of the front wheel bearings.
When
replacing front wheel bearings on an ABS equipped vehicle, be certain
to install with the ABS encoder facing the inside of the vehicle. If a
bearing is installed backwards, or if a non-ABS bearing is used on
an
ABS equipped vehicle, one of these DTC's will set:
-C1233 - LF ABS wheel-speed sensor/ABS sensor
rotor
-C1234 - RF ABS wheel-speed sensor/ABS sensor
rotor

Dark Gray ring indicates this side DOES have an encoder - Install
toward inside of vehicle (away from wheel). This side will also be
slightly magnetic and a paper clip will stick to the dark Gray ring.

Silver ring indicates this side DOES NOT have an encoder - Install
toward outside of vehicle (toward wheel).
If bearing looks like this on both sides, this is for a NON-ABS
model vehicle and should not be installed on an ABS equipped
vehicle.
