Symptom and Conditions

During PCM reprogramming, occassionally, due to software inconsistencies, PTU battery failures, DLC cables being accidentally disconnected, the PCM module may be come blanked/erased and the vehicle may not start. In this case, follow the below procedure to try to recover the MODULE, reprogram the as-built data and/or calibration data back into the MODULE. This procedure is known as "The NO COMM's Recovery Method". 

Repair Procedure

NOTE: Please refer to SSB #01-030/08 for additional details regarding Module Reprogramming Precautions.
                                                                      
YOU MUST FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS EXACTLY OR THE PCM MAY NOT RECOVER!
                                                                      
* Battery charger should be connected to vehicle battery and set to   
   less than 20 AMPS charge rate. 
* IDS laptop should be connected to 110V-115V.                        
* RE-START THE IDS LAPTOP BEFORE STARTING THE PROCEDURE. 
                                                                      
1. Connect M-MDS via DLC cable to vehicle. 
2. MAKE SURE THE IGNITION KEY IS IN THE OFF POSITION! 
3. ID the vehicle normally. DO NOT TURN ON THE KEY AS M-MDS ASKS YOU TO DO! WAIT UNTIL YOU ARE INSTRUCTED TO DO SO.
4. The Blue Progress Bar will go across and sit idle for 2 min.         
5. The screen will change and will say "No communication can be establi-
    shed would you like to re-try"?                                      
6. Select "NO".                                                         
7. Screen shows "Set ignition switch to the off posistion", it is       
    already off. Press tick.                                             
8. Screen shows "Set ignition switch to the on posistion", DO NOT turn   
    on just press tick.                                                  
9. Screen shows "Set ignition switch to the off posistion", it is        
    already off. Press tick.                                             
10. Screen shows "Set ignition switch to the on posistion", DO NOT turn 
      on just press tick.                                                 
11. Screen shows "The diagnostic tester is unable to communicate with   
      this vehicle. You will be prompted to select a vehicle from the     
      list. Press tick.                                                   
12. Select "All Other" at top of the list. Press Tick.                  
13. Screen shows "To enable diagnostic tester to identify the PCM,      
      please enter one of the following on the next screen, PCM part     
      number, Calibration number or Tear tag number. Press tick.          
14. Enter the PCM part number PRINTED ON THE PCM. Press tick.           
      NOTE: Use the first 4 charaters and last letter(Example: N3H4*****B)
15. Screen shows Vehicle specification screen, if all is correct, select YES. 
16. Select tool box icon at top of the screen.                          
17. Select module programming. Press tick.                              
18. Select module reprogramming, PCM, press tick.                       
19. Screen shows "A later calibration is available. Do you want to      
      program the PCM with it". Select "YES".                             
20. Screen shows "Ensure vehicle battery is in good condition and all   
      accessories are turned off". Press tick.                            
21. Screen shows "It is recommended that you carry out Self Test to     
      identify any DTC  that may be present". Select "NO".                
22. Screen shows a list of reprogramming issues related to the vehicle. 
      Press tick.                                                         
23. Screen shows "set ignition switch to off posistion" it is already   
      off. Press tick.                                                    
24. Screen shows "Please read the following information carefully. 
      Note: start a reprogramming session with a low battery in the vehicle and
      or programming tool. The fuel pump and the cooling fan's may run     
      during the following procedure". Press tick.                         
25. Screen shows "Set ignition switch to the ON (Posistion 2)". Do this  
      and press tick.                                                      
26. Screen shows "Downloading data, PCM programming please wait".        
27. Screen shows "Set ignition switch to OFF (Posistion O)". Do this and 
      press tick.                                                          
28. Screen shows "Module programming, operation in progress".            
29. Screen shows "Set ignition switch to on posistion". Do this and      
      press tick.                                                          
30. Screen shows "Set ignition switch to off posistion". Do this and     
      press tick.                                                          
31. Screen shows "Calibration has been loaded and checked". Press tick.
32. Screen shows "If required obtain a PCM reprogramming label and 
      complete with the following data "Date""Part#". Press tick.          
33. Screen shows "Operation success, Programming complete". Press tick.  
34. Screen shows "Set ignition switch to the ON (Posistion 2)". Do this  
      and press tick.    
35. Screen shows "Clearing fault codes".            
36. Screen shows "Set ignition switch to OFF (Posistion O)". Do this and 
      press tick.  
37. Module recovery is now complete.
